Project Information
Panorama Battery Project
Panorama Battery is currently under development by Recurrent Energy. The project is located approximately 5.8km south west of the City of Bathurst in New South Wales. The project consists of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 100 Megawatts/200 Megawatt Hours and is located directly adjacent to the existing TransGrid Panorama 132kV Substation. Panorama Battery will play an important role in providing stability to the network by charging up during the day when renewable energy generation is high and then providing that power back to the grid at night to support high demand.
Technical Summary
The site was selected due to its access to the existing TransGrid substation, land use, site access, minimal environmental disturbance and terrain.
Panorama Battery Benefits:
- Increase in local employment and investment opportunities during construction. The Project is expected to generate approximately 20 full time equivalent (FTE) construction jobs and one (1) FTE operational job.
- Minimises energy fluctuations and allows for the distribution of energy in accordance with market demand
- The BESS is located along a major transmission route which is in line with the Federal Government’s direction to improve the affordability and security of the national energy market while also delivering on international climate commitments.
Planning and Approvals
The Development application was placed on public exhibition by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) between 24 July 2024 and 22 August 2024, this included an Environmental Impact Statement which:
- Outlined the Proposal
- Addressed the Planning Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (known as SEARs)
- Proposed environmental impact mitigation measures for the Proposal.
Next steps:
The Response to Submissions report has been submitted to DPHI and is now available on the Major Projects website. The Department will now review the report and is expected to release a determination for the Project in late 2025.
